Welcome

Plans for the 2019 Winter Symposium of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine in Rotorua, New Zealand are well underway. There will be a full day of workshops on Tuesday 30 April with the formal scientific program starting on Wednesday 1 May and running until midday on Friday 3 May

Keynote speakers: Tim Parke is an Emergency Physician from Glasgow and formerly Director of Auckland City Hospital ED.  Jan Bone is an Emergency Physician from Christchurch who responded to the extra-ordinary challenge of a major earthquake and is a strong advocate for resilience in emergency medicine. They are engaging speakers ~ there is more information on the website Speakers page.

Location: Rotorua has a strong Māori culture with 38% of the local population identifying as Māori. In recognition of this we have chosen a Māori theme for the event – 'Te Wero' is the Māori challenge. In Māori culture it is the way the challenge is received that reveals your Mana. In emergency medicine we face many challenges and this symposium will explore ways we can respond positively to these challenges.

The draft programme is available to view and abstract submissions are open ~ check the website page for the themed sessions. Registration is also now open – so what are you waiting for!! Look out for the workshop registration in early December.  Many of the workshops have limited capacity so book early to avoid disappointment.

The Rotorua area is renowned for its thermal activity and draws visitors from all around the world to view the spectacular local scenery.  This makes it a great destination for an event of this kind with so much for delegates, partners and family to do outside of the symposium.

Your enthusiastic organising committee have been working hard to put together a memorable academic and social occasion. Our social events team have some real treats awaiting delegates which will showcase all that Rotorua has to offer ~ check out the social programme. The Millennium, Rotorua is an ideal local venue with a range of high class accommodation and easy access meeting facilities.

I look forward to seeing you in Rotorua for the 2019 'Winter' Symposium and can guarantee a few days of great education and wonderful Kiwi hospitality.
